Frances Sydney, eldest daughter of John W. and Lydia Ragsdale SHANKS, died in Culver Hospital, Crawfordsville, on Saturday morning at 8:45 , after a week's illness resulting from a tumor on the brain. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church here at 1:30 on Monday afternoon, the body lying in state from 12:30 to 1:30. Rev. Victor Keiser was in charge and Walter Taylor and Mrs. Elby Emmert, with Mrs. Taylor at the piano, sang The City Four Square and We Are Going Down the Valley. The pall bearers were Parke and Lowell Spencer; Darwin and Joe McNutt; Joe and john Gilliland. The flowers were carried by Mrs. Powell; Mrs. Keiser; Mrs. Lowell Spencer; Mrs. Fred McNutt; and Misses Maxine and Sue Gilliland; Bertha Spencer and Mary Kritz. Frances Shanks was born in Waveland July 13, 1894. She attended the public schools, graduating with the Class of 1914-15. She then attended the nurses training course at the Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis, graduating with the Class of 1921. When 9 she united with the Waveland Methodist Church under the pastorate of Rev. OP Paxton, and led a consistent Christian Life. She always took a more than professional interest in her work, and the many words of appreciation from her patients were fully deserved. She was an affectionate daughter and the care of her mother who has been in poor health for years, was always her foremost thought. Her death is the first break in an affectionate family circle. She was taken seriously ill on Sunday previous to her death, while taking care of Mrs. Ben Harbeson. Her case was critical from the start and was not understood by the physicians. She was taken to Culver Hospital on Monday and lingered in great pain until Saturday. Examination showed the presence of a tumor in the temple, hemorrhage resulting from which was the cause of her death. She is survived by 3 brothers; John of Linnsburg; Joseph of Thorntown; Frank of Browns Valley and by one sister, Mrs. Hubert Smith of Hammontown, NJ, by the sorrowing parents and a host of friends. When we think on what appears to us as the untimely close of a life of such useful promise, we can only turn for consolation to another whose mission was also healing and who passed from this life in the prime of human life. Among those present from a distance were; Joseph Ragsdale of Lyford; Henry Ragsdale of Ladoga; Mrs. Joseph Skaggs of Linnsburg; Mrs. Jesse Joseph and Mrs. Rupert McCafferty, Thorntown; Mrs. Walter Nevins of New Market; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Fordice of Russellville; Miss Elizabeth Geppinger, Dr. and Mrs. Ball, Mr. and Mrs. Dan Goshal, Mrs. CH Johnson, Mrs. AC Deere and Miss Eunice sharp of Crawfordsville; Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Barnard, Mr. and Mrs. IM Mullikin of ladoga; Misses Elizabeth Fowler, Josephine Hale, Pearl Grege, Fern Dumbauld and Lola Lambert of Indianapolis, Miss Leota Tague of Byron and Mrs. John Neander of Macomb, Ill. The other members of her graduating class of 1914-15 were Ruth Hodgkin; Grade Gilliland; Margaret Peck ;Gladys Moore; Mabel Weaver; Mary Copus; Robert Burford; Molly Seybold; Emma Clore; Dorris Wilkinson; Otho Glover; Virginia Oldshue; Guy Bayless; William Settles; Frank Porter; Lee Owens and Maynard Spruhan.-- kbz
